Electric skateboards are ever-evolving. They were initially designed for local transport, but now we have some that are specially designed “off-road” electric skateboards which can traverse sand, grass, and dirt with ease.

What Is An Electric Skateboard

An electric skateboard is by far the fastest and lightest personal mobility device today. It’s based on a skateboard that reaches speeds of up to 50 kph. An electric skateboard consists of an electric motor, a battery, and a deck. The motor is controlled via a wireless throttle and an electronic speed controller.

Types of Electric Skateboards

There are two types of electric skateboard motors; hub motors and out-runner motors. Hub motors are cheaper and require low maintenance. They are built directly into the wheels, which produce less torque but will give you more range than an out-runner motor.

Out-runner motors are mechanically more complicated, more expensive, and noisier. They use a belt and pulley system to drive the wheel. The speed of the board will depend on the size of the pulley used. It is faster, but requires more power and offers less range when compared to the hub motors.

Electric Speed Controller

The Electronic Speed Controller (ESC) is a crucial component of electric skateboards. Without it, varying the speed of the motor for accelerating or braking becomes impossible. VESCs are not equal; different manufacturers modify and improve their blueprints and adding unique features. They offer advanced features like regenerative braking, which help conserve energy and increase the board’s range, protection of vital components like the motor, and battery plus additional programming options, including acceleration curves among others.

Trucks

Trucks are also crucial components of the board. The size of the truck depends on the surface of the board, which means the larger the surface, the bigger the axis of the truck. The length of the board, the wheelbase, and flexibility of the deck all play a part in determining the board’s stability. Longboard decks are more stable. And the longer the deck, the longer the wheelbase which results in better weight distribution. Additionally, a less flexible, or stiffer, deck makes a stable board.

Meepo Board

Meepo makes some of the fastest electric skateboards in the market. Their boards are the de facto face of cheap, fast hub-motor powered electric skateboards. The slowest Meepo board, the Meepo Classic 2, is capable of reaching speeds up to 40 kph. The AWD PRO can reach speeds up to 55 kph, making it the fastest Meepo board, and quite possibly the fastest hub motor electric skateboard ever built.

Earlier models used convex-shaped decks, which made the Meepo boards uncomfortable. However, newer versions now use concave-shaped decks, made of layers of Canadian maple with a boosted-style split enclosure system. The concave shape makes the Meepo more comfortable and gives it the flexibility to maneuver on longer rides easily.  
Meepo Board Features
One selling point of the Meepo boards is the battery. It’s durable and attains a full charge in less than 3 hours. Though the charging time is the same across their boards, Meepo boards differ when it comes to the range with the Meepo Classic 2, offering the longest range of 40 km.

Meepo V3 and Mini 2 models are fitted with 90 mm wheels. However, if you intend to use it in rough terrains, you can replace them with the 100 mm wheels that are primarily fitted in the Meepo Classic 2, NLS PRO, and AWD PRO models.

Most boards have a power button. But the Meepo boards have a smart turn-on function that allows them to automatically power on when rolled in any direction. The Meepo control boards (VESCs) have a water-resistant coating to keep them safe from some minor water-related accidents.

Note: Meepo boards are not entirely waterproof, so don’t ride them on rainy days; nonetheless, they can withstand water from a paddle. Other essential features include the lock function, which makes it easy for riders to maneuver slopes.

Boosted Board

Boosted boards are powered by belt drive motors with smooth, wide, and short wheels designed for use on streets and pavements. There are four models available; Mini S, Mini X, Plus, and Stealth.

Both the Boosted Mini S and Mini X commuter shortboards are powered by the same 1,000-watt belt-drive motor but have different speed and acceleration power (29 kmh for Mini S and 32 kmh for the Mini X). The Boosted Plus and Stealth use the same brushless motor belt drive system but just like the Mini S and Mini X, they have different speeds and acceleration power (39 kph for the Stealth and 35 kph for the Plus). The Mini S is the smallest, slowest and cheapest of the bunch, and the Stealth being the most expensive and fastest Boosted board.

Boosted Board Range
When it comes to range, the Stealth, and the Plus models, when fully charged, take you up to 22.5 km. The batteries fitted in the two longboards (Boosted Stealth and Boosted Plus) take 1 h 45 min to charge from zero to full. The Mini S and Mini X, which take 1 h 15 min to charge, can last for 11 km and 22 km respectively. The batteries fitted in Boosted boards have an integrated Battery Management System (BMS). The BMS helps protect them from overvoltage, undervoltage, short circuit, overcurrent, and overheating.

Note: According to IATA standards, only the Mini X can be allowed on a plane because of its 99 watt-hour battery.

Smart Device Compatibility
Another perk of the Boosted board is that you can connect it to your Android or iOS smartphone through the Boosted App. The app makes it easier to map your tracks, monitor the board’s mileage, and install manufacturer’s updates to the board. It’s impossible to see the speed your moving at with the app, but if you have a smartwatch, you can monitor your live speed.

Note: Boosted boards are not waterproof, so avoid puddles and driving in wet conditions in general. Another not-so-exciting feature of the Boosted boards is its remote control which lacks an LCD screen for tracking live speed (you need a smartwatch and the app for this feature), battery state, mileage, etc.
